Sikorsky UH-60 "Blackhawk" Helicopter |
The Sikorsky UH-60 "Blackhawk' helicopter is synonymous with the modern era. It's been in service since 1979 in the US Military and has been exported to friendly nations as well. For this mesh, I wanted to provide enough detail in the model to hold up in a pre-rendered or in-game-cinematic, while also keeping the model light enough to work in a real-time environment(next gen game engine). In our last game, the highest LOD for the main vehicle topped out at around 40k polygons. In anticipation of PS4/XBoxOne hardware, I wanted to land somewhere around 40k-60k polygons. |

As always, I went about researching to get the details correct. Fortunately, there was an abundance of imagery and plans online. A little harder was finding reference on things like the engines, rotor mechanism and suspension. I wanted to get these details right. Finally, I wanted to get the correct finish on the model. Like many military vehicles, the average Blackhawk is painted in a matte pigment. It sees alot of abuse in the sun, sand and dessert conditions in the current thearter of operation. I wanted to show this level of wear without venturing into the "not airworthy" category of too much grunge and rust. |
Below are examples of the textures used on this model. The model has A-symetry, so UV space was maximized by mirroring. This always makes for some challenges when adding in neccessary details like numbering and signage - because when mirrored, that text is also mirrored. To resolve this, I chose to number in palindrome, like 808, so that it would look identical when mirrored. For the "United States Army" text, I cut out that section along a natural seam and flipped it. |
